Medicaid work requirement in West Virginia: what applies to you in 2027
Starting no later than January 2027, most adults 19 to 64 on Medicaid expansion must show 80 hours a month of work, school, volunteering or a work program, or $580 of income, unless the rule does not apply to them. Below is what West Virginia has published about how it will check, with a link to each source. West Virginia decides; this page only explains.
What West Virginia has published
- When it starts
- 2027-01-01. Applicants may need to comply in the month before (Dec 2026 for Jan 2027 applications). Current members start with renewals due March 2027.Source: 1 (West Virginia's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How many months it looks back
- Application: the 1 month before applying. Renewal: all or part of at least 1 month since the last renewal. Inmate exception: the 3 months before application or renewal.Source: 1 (West Virginia's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How often you renew
- 6 months for some members beginning January 2027.Source: 1 (West Virginia's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How it checks medical frailty
- Agency lists frail conditions (serious or complex conditions requiring regular care, disabling mental health conditions, etc.) but no identification method. Not from the agency, per KFF, March 2026: planned sources are claims, data match with other programs, treating-provider confirmation, self-attestation and a screener.Source: 1 (West Virginia's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20

West Virginia has not said this yet on the pages checked. Ask your Medicaid office, and keep copies of what you send.
- Whether your own word counts in 2027: not published as of 2026-10-20. DoHS checks the data it holds; if it needs more, it may ask for pay stubs, hours records or a volunteer list with a verifier contact, due within 30 days. Not from the agency: KFF (March 2026) lists WV as planning self-attestation for frailty if allowed. A 2026 bill, HB 5645 (work requirements), was introduced; its status was not verified and no law barring attestation was confirmed.
