Medicaid work requirement in Utah: what applies to you in 2027
Starting no later than January 2027, most adults 19 to 64 on Medicaid expansion must show 80 hours a month of work, school, volunteering or a work program, or $580 of income, unless the rule does not apply to them. Below is what Utah has published about how it will check, with a link to each source. Utah decides; this page only explains.
What Utah has published
- When it starts
- 2027-01-01. Applies to Adult Expansion and Targeted Adult Medicaid (TAM). The agency says 'You do not need to do anything right now.' No soft launch is published.Sources: 1 2 3 4 5 (Utah's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- Whether your own word counts in 2027
- State law (H.B. 471, 2026, signed): if state data can't confirm medical frailty, the department may approve the exemption for now based on the diagnosis you name, but must then verify it with electronic data or a statement from a health care professional. So in Utah, plan on a clinician's statement. Agency pages say only 'You may need to provide proof of these activities every 6 months' and that DWS checks records first.Sources: 1 2 3 4 5 (Utah's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How many months it looks back
- Application: the month before applying. Renewal: from the last renewal or approval until now (at least 1 month). Incarceration: the 3 months before the last approval or renewal.Sources: 1 2 3 4 5 (Utah's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How often you renew
- 6 months for Adult Expansion and TAM (American Indian and Alaska Native members with verified status stay at 12 months).Sources: 1 2 3 4 5 (Utah's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
In Utah's own words

- How it checks medical frailty: not published as of 2026-10-20 on agency pages. The partner FAQ says frailty 'need[s] more definition'. Not from the agency, per KFF, March 2026: planned sources are claims, treating-provider confirmation, self-attestation and a health assessment screener.
