Medicaid work requirement in Michigan: what applies to you in 2027
Starting no later than January 2027, most adults 19 to 64 on Medicaid expansion must show 80 hours a month of work, school, volunteering or a work program, or $580 of income, unless the rule does not apply to them. Below is what Michigan has published about how it will check, with a link to each source. Michigan decides; this page only explains.

- 2027-01-01 for applications. Current Healthy Michigan Plan (HMP) enrollees: renewal dates on or after 2027-03-01. No soft launch is published.Source: 1 (Michigan's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- Whether your own word counts in 2027
- Medical frailty: yes. In 2027 MDHHS will not require documentation for self-attested conditions; documentation is required from 2028. - How many months it looks back
- Application: 1 month, either the month before or the month of application. Renewal: at least 1 month since the last renewal, or since coverage started if it is the first renewal.Source: 1 (Michigan's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How often you renew
- Not stated on the MDHHS work-requirement page as of 2026-10-20. Secondary sources (community mental health presentations, e.g. cmhcm.org, norcocmh.org) say six-month renewals take effect March 1, 2027.Source: 1 (Michigan's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How it checks medical frailty
- Claims, encounter and program-enrollment data checked against a Category 1/Category 2 code list. Category 2 conditions need added severity indicators. Automatic exemption for 30+ days in a hospital, hospice, nursing facility or psychiatric facility, or for PACE, MI Choice or Habilitation Supports Waiver enrollment. The exemption lasts 12 months. This closely resembles a tiered model. Code list: www.michigan.govSource: 1 (Michigan's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
