Medicaid work requirement in Louisiana: what applies to you in 2027
Starting no later than January 2027, most adults 19 to 64 on Medicaid expansion must show 80 hours a month of work, school, volunteering or a work program, or $580 of income, unless the rule does not apply to them. Below is what Louisiana has published about how it will check, with a link to each source. Louisiana decides; this page only explains.
What Louisiana has published
- When it starts
- 2027-01-01 for members up for renewal and for new applicants. January 2027 renewals were mailed a notice in May 2026 and a renewal packet in November 2026. No soft launch is published. Members have 45 days to respond.Source: 1 (Louisiana's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- Whether your own word counts in 2027
- For 2027 renewals, members can self-attest to two exemptions: caretaker relative/family caregiver, and medically frail. From 2028 a medical provider may be required to complete the form. Self-attestation of work, volunteer, income/hours or student status: not published. Pay stubs can replace the employer verification form.Source: 1 (Louisiana's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How many months it looks back
- Application: not published as of 2026-10-20. Renewal: at least one full month in the months before the renewal period. Not from the agency, per AmeriHealth Caritas LA, an MCO: one month in the last six months before renewal begins.Source: 1 (Louisiana's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
