Medicaid work requirement in Indiana: what applies to you in 2027
Starting no later than January 2027, most adults 19 to 64 on Medicaid expansion must show 80 hours a month of work, school, volunteering or a work program, or $580 of income, unless the rule does not apply to them. Below is what Indiana has published about how it will check, with a link to each source. Indiana decides; this page only explains.
What Indiana has published
- When it starts
- 2027-01-01 for new applicants and for redeterminations started on or after that date. A January 2027 applicant must meet the requirement in Oct, Nov and Dec 2026. No soft launch or no-disenrollment period is published. FSSA says over 58,000 HIP members are not currently in compliance (announcement dated 10/05/2026).Sources: 1 2 3 (Indiana's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How many months it looks back
- Application: 3 months, the three months before the application month. Renewal: 3 months before the renewal month, and the same 3 months before each quarterly work-requirement review.Sources: 1 2 3 (Indiana's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How often you renew
- Every 6 months, plus quarterly (every 3 months) compliance checks.Sources: 1 2 3 (Indiana's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How it checks medical frailty
- The state decides; clinicians may only recommend. FSSA says it is 'still working with' CMS on frailty criteria. No condition list and no claims method published.Sources: 1 2 3 (Indiana's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
In Indiana's own words
“For existing HIP members, the lookback period will be three months before the renewal month or three months before the quarterly work requirements review.”in.gov
“You renew HIP every six months, and the state checks your hours every three months.”in.gov
“Medically frail will be determined by the State. Physicians, and other clinicians, may provide recommendations on the medical history of their patients.”in.gov

Indiana has not said this yet on the pages checked. Ask your Medicaid office, and keep copies of what you send.
- Whether your own word counts in 2027: Not published by FSSA. A news report, not the agency (Indiana Capital Chronicle, 2026-08-12), says state Senate Enrolled Act 1 (2026) bars self-attestation in the first year. FSSA's own FAQ says community service needs either its form or 'official documentation from the community agency'. KFF (March 2026 survey) also reports Indiana does not plan to accept self-attestation of medical frailty.
- whether your own word counts in 2027 on the agency's own pages (the state-law bar comes from a secondary source only)
- frailty condition list or claims method
- use of the CMS 3-tier frailty model
