Medicaid work requirement in Arkansas: what applies to you in 2027
Starting no later than January 2027, most adults 19 to 64 on Medicaid expansion must show 80 hours a month of work, school, volunteering or a work program, or $580 of income, unless the rule does not apply to them. Below is what Arkansas has published about how it will check, with a link to each source. Arkansas decides; this page only explains.
What Arkansas has published
- When it starts
- Soft launch 2026-07-01 with no penalties; enforcement 2027-01-01. From 2027-01-01, members who don't meet the requirement get 30 days to show compliance before benefits are suspended (per the 2026-02-23 DHS news release).Sources: 1 2 3 (Arkansas's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How many months it looks back
- Application: 1 month (the month before applying). Renewal: at least 1 month in every 6 months.Sources: 1 2 3 (Arkansas's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How often you renew
- Effectively 6 months: current enrollees must show compliance at least one month every six months.Sources: 1 2 3 (Arkansas's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
- How it checks medical frailty
- Called 'special medical needs'. The FAQ gives qualifying examples (cancer, end-stage kidney disease, HIV/AIDS, major heart disease, MS, Parkinson's) and conditions that generally do not qualify unless very severe (diabetes, asthma, hypertension, ADHD, obesity, anemia). Being on the medically frail benefit plan does not automatically qualify. SSDI recipients are identified automatically. No reference to the CMS 3-tier model.Sources: 1 2 3 (Arkansas's own pages, listed below) · checked 2026-10-20
In Arkansas's own words
“DHS launched a soft implementation of the requirement on July 1, 2026, but no penalties will be in effect until January 1, 2027.”humanservices.arkansas.gov
“Current enrollees: You must show you met the requirement at least one month every six months, though DHS will first try to confirm your status using information we already have.”humanservices.arkansas.gov
“DHS will identify SSDI recipients automatically.”humanservices.arkansas.gov

- Whether your own word counts in 2027: not published as of 2026-10-20. DHS first checks existing data (wage records, SNAP data) and confirms hours automatically where it can; otherwise members report online, by phone or in person and must 'send proof' within 30 days. Not from the agency: KFF (March 2026 survey) reports the state does not plan to accept self-attestation of medical frailty.
- whether your own word counts in 2027
- whether any Arkansas state law limits self-attestation (not checked)
